Whether you’re a first-time rider (more of my personal tips for first-timers) or a regular cyclist looking to improve your skills, did you know that TfL fund free, tailored courses to suit your individual abilities and goals. I personally had no idea, so thanks TfL! The courses vary from complete beginner to advanced cyclists and are available at most boroughs of London.
Basic cycle skills: Complete beginner
If you didn’t get a chance to learn as a kid, and don’t have a clue of how to learn to cycle now, you can learn how to bike with a free session tailored to you and your needs. You’ll practice in a safe, off-road environment with a fully qualified instructor. According to TFL, in this session you’ll learn the basics, build skills and gain confidence to navigate around your local area.
Urban cycle skills: Intermediate
If you fancy improving your cycling skills, maybe want to start to work every day, TFL can also provide you with a free one-to-one bike session with an instructor. You’ll start in a safe off-road environment to refresh your cycling technique and develop new skills before moving on to practice on quiet roads. Your instructor will support you throughout to help you cycle with more confidence. Request a free session in the borough where you live, work or study
Advanced cycle skills
And if you are a bit of a perfectionist, been riding for a while, but still wanted to improve your cycling techniques with a free one-to-one session from a fully qualified trainer, you certainly can. But only if you are located in London. You can be taught on how to improve your performance when dealing with complex junctions, heavy traffic or cycling at night and receive assurance that you are cycling efficiently and effectively.
